Project notes / Commercial switchboards

3,000 A switchboard changeover.

Our crew worked on the changeover of this 3,000 A industrial switchboard. Planning the shutdown meant agreeing with the site operator which loads could go off and which had to keep running.

Before the power goes off.

The photograph shows the original board meters. On a changeover, we start with the board schedule and check it with the people who run the plant. They know which loads can stop, for how long, and who can authorise the return to service.

Planning the changeover

Before the shutdown.

01

Find the loads that matter

We walk the existing supply with the site contact. Refrigeration, security, communications, pumps and tenants may have different operating hours and shutdown limits.

02

Agree how the site will run

We work through timing, temporary power if required, access for moving the equipment, and the responsibilities of the electrical contractor, site operator and network.

03

Test and hand back

The changeover plan includes testing and a controlled return to service. We agree who will be present and what records the site needs when the work is handed over.

After handover

Who looks after the board once it’s back in service?

Tell us which boards you have, when they carry their usual load and who can approve repairs. We can agree an inspection window, who gets the report and what happens if we find a fault.

Questions, answered

Planning a board upgrade

Can you stage work around tenants?

Yes. We need the affected tenancies, access windows and any essential loads identified before we can plan an outage or quote temporary power.

Can you price from a photo of the board?

A photo of the closed board gets the conversation started. A commercial upgrade normally also needs the existing information, access to the site and a discussion with the person who operates it.
